we laughed, we cried, we cursed nike for those 'my better is better than your better' commercials. we prayed for demarcus nelson to stop choking long enough to help duke move past the second round. we had a long, philosophical discussion about duke's practice of recruiting what were referred to as "bitches." we watched all the overtime action in tampa and were crazy envious of all those silly floridians who got lucky and were treated to one of the most exciting days in tournament history(at least on one court.)
we talked shit about tyler hansborough and wondered why he can't ever seem to breathe through his nose. we made fun of adam morrison, who is in desperate need of a haircut, and who looked positively homicidal as he watched the gonzaga hackey sacks lose in the first round to davidson.
and then, there is davidson.
ah, march madness. charles put it so well when he called them the perfect march madness story. they have everything a great march madness story should have: they are improbable contenders from a mid-major program(um, i think those guys at espn have a term... snow white? sleeping beauty? CINDERELLA. that's it) who were already riding high on a 22- game winning streak when they took the court on friday, and at the center of the hype is an undersized sophomore who drills threes with ease and put up 40 points in the gonzaga game, effectively and very literally(when they were celebrating, anyhow) carrying the team.
when stephen curry's 3-pointers really started falling in the second half, he would run back down the court after each one looking entirely unaffected. however, every so often after a big play the camera would catch him bouncing around and high-fiving and mid-air-chest-bumping(do we have a term for this yet?) his teammates with an enormous grin, looking like a ten-year-old who just gotten off the greatest rollercoaster in the world, met up with his friends and was about to head back for more.

dude. how's middle school?ah, march madness. charles put it so well when he called them the perfect march madness story. they have everything a great march madness story should have: they are improbable contenders from a mid-major program(um, i think those guys at espn have a term... snow white? sleeping beauty? have i mentioned that stephen curry is adorable? he looks barely old enough to be playing jv ball, let alone single-handedly winning games against georgetown in the ncaa tournament. it's awesome. his jumper, as everyone and their mom(even his, probably) has pointed out over the past few days, is absolutely pure: a beautiful stroke(sports illustrated termed it "elegant") that looks both effortless and masterful, as well as deadly. it's one of those things... for these few weeks, it doesn't get any better.
money in the bank.
and then there's his mom, crying, laughing, jumping up and down on the sidelines as she watches her son make tournament history. his dad, former nba star del curry, a virginia tech alum (charles williams almost lost his mind the other night when the commentator announced that virginia tech had screwed up recruiting curry, refusing him a scholarship, which led him to seek out davidson) watching proudly. at one point, curry pointed to his dad after a big shot, something ol' pops used to do to his own father when he played. awwwwwwwwwwwwww!
this friday at 7:10pm, davidson will tip off against wisconsin, and i have no plans but to be in front of my giant new television waiting to see what this kid will do next.
march madness rules.
