my '07 x-mas survival guide

x-mas is just around the corner people, but i'm sure you know that because it's no longer optional to bow out of christmas. the advertisting industry has seen to that. so if you wanna keep up with how to not get x-mas madness that makes you want to write off the human race and go live in a cave(one that the reality tv cameras cannot find, if there are any of those) the new method relies heavily upon your own discretion.

you could conveniently plan a vacation to a very far off land that isn't married to western religious practices.

you could fake a serious bout of a contagious illness and stay home for two days alone eating take-in and watching the wire on HBO(or any show, but for my money, i can't find another piece of television programming as totally awesome as the wire)

these are all options. this year, i have decided that, in addition to my other rebellious x-mas plans (cw and i will spend x-mas eve getting soused on wine or whatever we have around and engaging in our annual christmas eve scrabble takedown. the rubber match is inevitable. and on x-mas day, we are hopefully to ascend the empire state building, something which neither of us has ever done) i will endeavor to try something new. i think this year i am going to try and cook a ham, while swilling some pomagranate champagne punch, both of which i will create and serve at my moms house while we are visiting this weekend. i have never cooked a ham before. it just occured to me as something i ought to try.

oh! and i will probably soundtrack all of this with the Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas Singalong, which is an entirely awesome 5-disc collection of the incomprable Sufjan Stevens doing all manner and sorts of christmas songs. i picked it up yesterday while shopping for my ghost recon parcel delivery heirarchy present(read: secret santa) because i can't help but buy myself things, even at christmas time, and also because it is SO GOOD. you need this collection, trust me you do. it comes with stickers.

in other news, i am proud to report that i got an A in my first class of my graduate school career. that means i have a 4.0, and that i should cherish that because it likely won't last, especially since i am taking 3 classes next semester... yikes. one is a lit elective on herman melville, which should be cool...i always liked ol' herman. of course, all this is contigent on the nice loan people giving me the necessary funds to continue my education. please loan people! please!

well, i hope everyone who reads this post has a great holiday, and does whatever they can to not get bogged down by the joyless side of x-mas. remember! make a ham and play some scrabble! it's a great time.

oh, and if i could put in for some snow...that would make everything that much better,

don't go, fantasy football! i need you...

sadly, my fantasy football season has come to an end(or almost an end) as i didn't make the playoffs... what sucks the most is that i actually had a really good end-of-season: i finally figured out how to manage a good team, and got a pretty decent one assembled... i think it would have been less heartbreaking if i had stunk up the spot at the end of the season, rather than during weeks 4-8.

i am almost certainly going to experience some fantasy withdrawal...what the hell else am i going to obsess over, now that both fantasy football and school are coming to an end? the last time i had this much downtime, i started watching that bret michaels reality show religiously. the possibilities scare me.

by the way, i don't remember if i ever posted this quote back when it was uttered, but here's charles williams, explaining why that tila tequila show couldn't take up where bret michaels left off...

"i don't know, i think 'rock of love' was lightening in a bottle for me." -cwiii

ah, yes. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much t.v.

you know, for the record, fantasy football made me love terrell owens. yeah, it's that powerful. you can now find me, during any given dallas game, yapping about how he's misunderstood. maybe it's for the best that the fantasy season has ended.

speaking of football and too much t.v. i had a brilliant idea last night while watching the pats-ravens game on MNF. i know that the pats are not really ones for the end-zone celebration...they prefer cold, calculating domination as their calling card, rather than high profile stunts the likes of our friend ocho cinco. but all this undefeated talk, along with the constant buzzing of don shula in the background, nervously hovering in the hopes that the pats will blow it and the '72 miami dolphins will preserve their precious perfect season for yet another year is beginning to make me a little crazy... and here's what i came up with.

in the last regular-season game, one which will take place against the hapless eli manning(or whoever they have pulled off the streets of new jersey to replace him by then) as the patriots are no doubt laying waste to the entire squad(provided that they have, in fact, gone undefeated at this point) once the game is sewn up(which should be at about 11:02 in the first) randy moss, of the rand university, should follow a touchdown with the following: pull out a PTI-like mask of don shula's face, strap that baby on and do the deion sanders.

how great would that be? the world would be aflame with the sacriledge. don shula might throw nutri-system to the wind and go on a carb binge the likes of which has never before been seen! it would be glorious! no champagne in the champagne dinner tonight!

let me mention that i am not a patriots fan. not even close. but i really like my idea.

i emailed it to the sports guy. he's the only chance i have of getting it to the right people. although i'm sure at best i will wind up as one of the kooks in the mailbag column. i wouldn't mind.

in other news, i am personally offended on behalf of va tech and kansas... the mad dog from mike and the mad dog(the most new yorkest sports radio show in the history of sports radio shows, it's hilarious) claims that this will be the most boring bowl game of all time. i personally am interested to see what kansas is all about, since i have been hearing so much for months now...rock chalk jayhawk, son. it will be exciting for us. screw everyone else! no, not you.
